PICTURE PERFECT – DEATH BY ZERO MEN’S SINGLETS
PACEMAKER STEVE KIRBY TALKS FASHION
This week we caught up with Death by Zero designer Steve Kirby to discuss the drive behind Live’s latest obsession.
How did you get started in the world of fashion design?
What began as screen-printing studio, printing T’s for the like of Mooks, Mossimo and Stussy eventually took a life of its own and now we only print our own designs. Studied design at Melbourne’s best TAFEs and train yards.
Who do you design for? When you create your designs who do you envisage wearing them?
Our designs are made for everyone – we never try to be to focused as I believe you alienate people by being too one sided. That being said, our T’s have strong musical, celebrity and pop culture themes, so anyone who shares these common interests (or obsessions, more accurately).
Why have you selected the prints you have for Death by Zero?
We go for cool, there’s something about an image that hits you the moment you see it. Like a good pop song, it takes you back to some time and place, far away but maybe not too long ago, when you weren’t sitting staring at a computer screen.
What is the inspiration behind your designs (the fit, the fabrics)?
Fitted whilst relaxed, we want to offer a cut and feel that makes even the most non-metro guy comfortable in how he looks.
Where do you see Death by Zero in the future?
We just want to keep getting better. Looking back at first ranges to now, the progression is unbelievable. If we could keep going forward, pushing the boundaries and stay one step ahead. Not trendsetters but pacemakers!
Give us an overview of your creative process?
Design the T-shirt, sell the T-shirt, print the T-shirt, talk about the T-shirt.
Tell us about your latest fashion obsession?
Loose fit tanks for summer- it’s all about comfort for those summer BBQ’s and festivals. Bright prints on neutral coloured T’s- fluoro may be dead, but great to see the inclusion of lots of bright colours in summer prints!
